Prescriptions by post

[Name Removed] made this Freedom of Information request to Welsh Government This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

Welsh Government did not have the information requested.

Dear Welsh Government,

England has several pharmacies - which deliver by post.

Which is especially useful during COVID-19.

Why can’t vulnerable Welsh patients have the same service?

As prescriptions can only be collected once month.

Which means vulnerable patients visiting the chemist and putting themselves at risk, from infection, when chemists won’t deliver.

Therefore , are there any plans to stop this danger during COVID-19?

Yours faithfully,

Dear Welsh Government,

For clarification :

1. I’d like to know when (and how) the decision not to let Welsh patients have a postal service for prescriptions was made..

Who made it - and for what reason, is this service not allowed in Wales, unlike England.

ie Committee papers, etc backed up by any internal held correspondence, leading to this decision.

2. If there has been, or if any discussion is due, to assist the vulnerable during COVID-19, on the collection of their prescriptions from chemists.

Since making those , now confined to their homes, leave their homes and collect prescriptions from the chemist once a month, (instead of three for instance), which could be deleterious to their health .

- Please note. Not all Welsh chemists deliver to the homes of the vulnerable.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Welsh Government,

Thank you.

Perhaps I haven’t explained my request as well as I should have.

Collection not only due during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has clearly complicated matters.

But in the future too.

But because Wales is a countryside area, where households can be 10+miles from a chemist.

Many elderly or vulnerable people cannot drive, or can no longer drive to collect repeat prescriptions.

In these circumstances it would be sensible to be allowed to be able to receive their filled prescriptions by post.....as English patients do.

Or receive repeat batch prescriptions - by demand - more than once a month, where patients can visit chemists.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Welsh Government,

Thank you - but this appears to be an explanation, in the form of a letter.....written newly for this request.

It cannot have been on file before I made my request,

It is also an argument - rather than file data, which, as you will already know, pertains to FoIA.

Please therefore re-read the words used in my request.

Eg committee decisions, internal emails, documents - if you are confused,

As I wish to read how, when, who, what and why decisions were made, so that I can read them for myself..

Please therefore supply the requested data.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Welsh Government,

Thank you but the data on when the decision was made, who made it and for what reasons is still missing.

You have replied with another letter, which I specifically said was NOT required.

Yet you have ignored yet another clarification .

Once again, my request was for data on file at the date of my request.

Are your PR letters your final response, or was there anything on file relating to my request that you have been seemingly been previously intent on not providing?

If you have nothing on file, please state so clearly.

Because although I have only partial information ...and wish to fill that out with the data requested, it is my understanding that there is.

I will forward to the Information Commissioner’s Office, if your letter Is your final FOIA response.

Please reply promptly.

Yours faithfully,

Dear [Name Removed]

Thank you for your emails.  As stated in our letter, Welsh patients are
able to have prescriptions by post where pharmacies provide this service
in Wales and no decision has been made to stop this, we hold no
information that falls into scope of your request.  If you do not believe
we have complied with your request your next step is to go to the
Information Commissioners Office, as we advised in the response to your
request for an internal review.

Kind regards

Dear Welsh Government,

In that case, it seems that this NHS officer, who replied to me and n the question, has been misinformed:

‘ This was the Health board taking advice from Welsh Government and also acting in accordance with the Repeat Dispensing guidance, this is taken from the attached page and the community pharmacist is the gate keeper here,.....’

- Yet you have publically assured me that no such advice exists from the WG.

Can you now confirm that this officer was mis-advising me, or do you wish to consult your files again - before I revere to the Information Commissioner’s Office?

Yours faithfully,
