Dear University College London,
Please could I request the predicted grades for each successful applicant for the course Biological Science along with the predicted grades for each successful applicant for the course Pharmacy. Additionally could you write the GCSEs grades. Are GCSEs grades at an 8/9 valued the same as an A* for UCL?
Yours faithfully,
Pooja

Dear Pooja,
Thank you for your email.
Before we can proceed with your request we require some clarification. Please note that the timeframe for your request is on hold until we receive the clarification required to enable us to begin gathering information.
- Please confirm the academic year(s) you want data from regarding the predicted grades of successful applicants
- Is your request for predicted grades related to A-Levels? Please note that we are not able to provide you with the A-Level grades of individual applicants because this constitutes their personal data. We may be able to provide the average A-Level grades of successful applicants though, would you like us to gather this data?

Dear Finance.FOI Requests,
Thank you so much for your response.
Please could I have the data for the last 3 years.
My request is for the predicted grades related to the A-Levels when applying. Please could I instead have a proportion of the people who got in from cohort with A*AA, A*A*A and A*A*A* and AAA. Individual statistics do not need to be given, please could I also have the average A-level grades predictions of successful applicants.
Many thanks,
Pooja Sanghar
Dear Pooja,
Thank you for the clarification you've provided.
To ensure there is no ambiguity in the data we provide, could you please confirm what is meant by "the people who got in" - does this mean those who received an offer, those who enrolled or something else?
Please also confirm if this information is still required: "Additionally could you write the GCSEs grades. Are GCSEs grades at an 8/9 valued the same as an A* for UCL?". If it is still required, please confirm which applicants/students you require the GCSE grades of.

Dear Pooja,
Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of
Information Act (FOIA) 2000. I apologise for the delay in the provision of
this response.
We confirm that we hold information of the description specified in your
request.
Your request and our response
Please could I request the predicted grades for each successful applicant
for the course Biological Science along with the predicted grades for each
successful applicant for the course Pharmacy. Additionally could you write
the GCSEs grades. Please could I have the data for the last 3 years.
The information that you have requested concerns the predicted A level and
GCSE grades of applicants. Based on our preliminary assessment, we
estimate that to comply with your request would exceed the appropriate
costs limit under section 12 of the Freedom of information Act 2000, which
is currently set at £450 (equivalent to 18 hours work) by virtue of the
Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees)
Regulations 2004.
This is because we estimate that to locate, retrieve and extract this
information would take longer than 18 hours to complete. UCL receives a
large quantity of applications for each of the above courses per year and
these applications are not categorised by specific predicted grades. This
means that to determine which applicants applied with the specific
predicted grades that you have listed would require a manual review of
each applicant’s file. Section 12(1) states that: “Section 1(1) does not
oblige a public authority to comply with a request for information if the
authority estimates that the cost of complying with the request would
exceed the appropriate limit.”
So, in accordance with section 12(1) the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(the Act) this email acts as a Refusal Notice.
Are GCSEs grades at an 8/9 valued the same as an A* for UCL?
Please see the information available in the link below. The section “GCSE
and equivalent qualifications” shows the A-Level marks that are equivalent
to each GCSE score.

successful applicants.
Mean (average) A-Level grades of offer holders:
2022 2023 2024
BSc Biological Sciences A*A*A A*AA A*AA
MPharm Pharmacy A*AB ABB ABB
Mean (average) A-Level grades of entrants:

Dear Finance.FOI Requests,
Thank you for the quick response. I understand that the data will take too long to extract. Is there a possible way to get the average GCSEs for these courses too for the Biological Science courses, Biomedical Science courses and the Pharmacy courses?

Pooja Sanghar

Your request

Our response
The information that you have requested concerns the achieved GSCE grades

This is because we estimate that to locate, retrieve and extract this
information would take longer than 18 hours to complete. UCL receives over
4700 applications in total for the above courses per year and these
applications are not categorised by achieved or average GCSE grades. This
means that, to determine the average GCSE grades for offer holders would
require a manual review of each applicant’s file. Section 12(1) states
that: “Section 12(1) does not oblige a public authority to comply with a
