Pre-2010 pledge to Oasis Academy MediaCity UK

The request was partially successful.

Dear Oasis Academy MediaCityUK,

In 2008, Oasis pledged £1.5m to Oasis Academy MediaCity UK. I should be grateful if you could let me know when this was paid. I would also like details of any repayment plan for pledged money owing, if any.

I look forward to hearing from you within twenty working days.

Yours faithfully,

J Downs

Norma Downer-Powell,

Dear Ms Downs,

Thank you for your recent Freedom of Information request regarding Oasis
pledges. Please note your reference is: JDowns/1068/27Jan2017.

Our response to your request is:

Following changes in the procurement of the capital build program for
academies the original requirement to contribute towards the capital cost
of any new buildings was briefly replaced by proposal that £1.5 Million
endowment funds be raised by sponsors. This was rapidly followed by the
removal of any requirement from sponsors to find any donated funds. The
focus then changed to sponsors having to demonstrate their capability to
manage additional academies successfully. The rapid evolution of the
program effectively left charitable organisations like Oasis in an
impossible position to raise funds towards either endowment or capital
obligations. We have been clear with the DfE/EFA what our position is.

This is not to say external support has not been given to Oasis Academies
including MediaCityUK and John Williams in the form of educational input
from within Oasis support in developing the community around each of our
academies (a key part of our Ethos) and in the case of MediaCityUK
securing the actual land on which the academy is located.

Currently 75%? of Oasis academies are rated good or better by Ofsted and
we are committed to getting this to 100% in the next 2 years. We still
have a long way to go but we believe the life chances of our students have
significantly improved over the period of our tenure.
