Dear Mr Hall
Request for Information – ATISN 15770
Thank you for your request for information dated 10 December. You have asked:
1. How many potholes on trunk roads have been reported to the Welsh Government
for every financial since 2017/18.
2. How long, on average, does it take the Welsh Government to repair a pothole once
it has been reported.
3. How much money has been paid to drivers in compensation for damage/defect to
their car or tyres as a result of a pothole, broken down by financial year since
2017/18.
Please let me know if this is not an accurate description of the information you have
requested.
As your request currently stands, I believe it will be very time consuming to deal with.
Some of the information we hold on potholes will not be easily obtained. Our Agents,
the South Wales Trunk Road Agent (SWTRA) and the North and Mid Wales Trunk
Road Agent (NMWTRA) would need to integrate various systems including working
out the times to repair potholes. This means that the time it will take to locate, retrieve
and extract some of the information requested will be substantial. If I estimate it will
take more than 24 working hours of time to determine whether we hold the information
and to thereafter locate, retrieve and extract it, the Freedom of Information and Data
Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004 allow me to refuse to deal

with it. The appropriate limit specified for central government is £600, representative
of the estimated cost if taking over 24 working hours of time.
In order for me to search for the information you are seeking, it would be helpful if you
could provide a more specific request for information, for example by narrowing its
scope, such as reducing the timeframe considerably and limiting the information asked
for to less requirements. If you do refine your request in this way, this will be treated as
a new request. Otherwise, you will receive a response by 12 January 2022. If you
have any queries about this request, you can contact me at
FOI.EconomyandInfrastructure@gov.wales. Please remember to quote the reference
number above in any future correspondence.
Please note: the Welsh Government is facing unprecedented challenges during
the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As a result resources, both finances and
people, are being diverted away from many of our usual activities to deal with
the pandemic. This will undoubtedly impact on our ability to comply with the
normal requirements for information rights work and as a result you may
experience delays when making information rights requests during the
pandemic. We thank you for your understanding during this time.
