Postbox Data in Central Collections Management Database

The request was successful.

Robert Whittaker

Dear Royal Mail Group Limited,

Just over a year ago you released a set of data from your Central Collections Management Database, following an FOI request I made. Details of the request and the subsequent correspondence can be found at
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/po...

Since a year has now passed, and boxes may have been added or removed, I would like to repeat this request to obtain an up-to-date set of the data about your current post boxes.

I would therefore be grateful if you could provide me with an up-to-date copy of the information you provided before (i.e. the "Whittaker Annex.txt" file you sent me in http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/po... ) with the same 12 fields for each box, preferably in the same easy-to-parse CSV format.

Many thanks,

Robert Whittaker

- The data is a zipped text file but is comma seperated and can easily be imported into Excel.
- 114019 entries includes the majority of meter boxes but only 2 inside boxes
- 130 entries dont have any grid ref data
- 1 Record (B26 4296) is a duplicate entry but looks like 2 boxes as the grid ref is slightly different.

What's the copyright status of this data?

I've had no special permission or license to reproduce or reuse the data, so I would guess it's "Crown Copyright and Database Right Royal Mail 2012"

I've imported the data into Scraperwiki and going by some knowledge of where postboxes are, it seems that some are off. You can see the view of the data here - https://views.scraperwiki.com/run/postbo... and the raw data (with lats and lngs) is here https://scraperwiki.com/scrapers/uk_post...

Dear Royal Mail Group Limited,

I write with reference to my recent FOI request, the details of which can be seen online at http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/po...

Thank you very much for providing the data extract of postboxes from your Central Collections Management Database (CMD). It is just what I was looking for.

Having examined the data, it appears that there may be around 1000 indoor post boxes that are not listed in the file you sent. For example, box number IP24 3431, which is located inside the Tesco Superstore in Thetford.

Is it the case that these indoor boxes are not recorded in the CMD for some reason, or were they accidentally omitted from the data you sent? If the former, is there any reason for this? If the latter, then I'd be grateful if you could send me the omitted data for these boxes.

Similarly, are there any other sets/types of boxes that aren't stored in the CMD or that were accidentally omitted from the data you sent me? If the latter, then I'd be grateful if you could send me the omitted data for these boxes.

Many thanks for your help,

Robert Whittaker

Dear Royal Mail Group Limited,

It has now been more than a month since I sent you some follow-up questions to an FOI request you had previously answered (ref DTUP-8VHE2R).

If you have misplaced the email I sent, you can view it online at http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/po...

I believe the Freedom of Information Act requires you to respond to my follow-up questions within 20 working days (as it does with any request for information). It is now past this limit, so could you let me know when I might expect to receive your response?

Yours faithfully,

Robert Whittaker

Dear Mr Whittaker,

I can confirm that the email to which you refer in message below has not
been received by Royal Mail Group. We have had several instances recently
were the 'What Do They Know' system has failed to transmit messages from
its members to us.

In light of this I have contacted the team at 'What Do They Know' to ask
that they resend your request to us. As we have not previously had sight
of this request we will acknowledge it once received and provide a
deadline of 20 days from then. Please be assured however that as this
issue was not related to anything you have done, we will look to answer
your request as a matter of priority.

Kind Regards
