Policy for photographs on the MPS news section of its website

Panda Mery made this Freedom of Information request to Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) did not have the information requested.

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

I noticed that on https://news.met.police.uk/latest_news you’re using several pics all showing chain linked handcuffs, e.g. on:

https://news.met.police.uk/news/detectiv...
https://news.met.police.uk/news/two-men-... and
https://news.met.police.uk/news/man-char...

The handcuffs most commonly used by the MPS are rigid ones. I.e., these pics are most likely from USA.

Please share any policy about the use of these pics and documented rationales for not using pics showing handcuffs typically used by the MPS.

Yours faithfully,

Panda Mery

Dear Metropolitan Police Service (MPS),

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am thankful for the promptness of the response to my request however I expect the search to have unfortunately missed information held so I am writing to request an internal review of Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)'s handling of my FOI request 'Policy for photographs on the MPS news section of its website'.

These 'generic images used to illustrate news and press releases' must have been sourced from an photographic agency or photographer. Their copyright and licence must have been checked. And these specific images were chosen. So at the bare minimum you must hold a licence agreement for the use of these images or a record of their source if they are in the public domain. Also if you do not have an explicit policy about which type of photograph to use for which type of news story, you likely hold some training guidance for new staff recruited to the MPS Directorate of Media and Communications (DMC) to help them make these decisions.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/p...

Yours faithfully,

Panda Mery
