Policies relating to the use of meat in television

The request was refused by British Broadcasting Corporation.

Dear British Broadcasting Corporation,

I was very disappointed to see that real meat was used as a prop on Saturday night's Strictly. Simon Rimmer and Karen Clifton bit into some food at the end of their routine and confirmed it was dry chicken.
I am concerned about animal welfare and food waste. Whilst I do not eat meat myself, I appreciate that others do. However, I find it very frustrating when people are disrespectful and waste meat, as, a life was taken to provide this and so it is only fair it is consumed. I can't imagine this meat (if described by contestants as dry chicken) was eaten by cast crew although I would be over the moon if it was and was not wasted.

Please can you let me know if you have any policies, procedures or other documents in place relating to meat used in your television programmes that may support how you've thought about this from an ethical point of view?

I understand in a cooking show you will need to use real meat, but, absolutely nothing would have been taken away from the overall entertainment of Simon and Karen's dance if there was a substitute in place. Using real meat to me seems totally unnecessary.

I very much look forward to hearing back from you.

Yours faithfully,

Chelmsford City Resident
