Policies of children carrying or using knifes or shanks in school grounds.

S. Prichard made this Freedom of Information request to Writtle University College

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was successful.

Dear Writtle University College,

We are a team of former professionals that not only whistle-blow, but seek information to the public to ensure a safe and secure environment for all. We are looking into an incident at an unnamed school and would like to compare policies, procedures and actions taken.
1. What is your school type; i.e. Faith, Free, Private, Boarding, Academy, Infant, Junior, Senior, Sixth Form, etc.

2. What gender does your school cater for; i.e. mixed, all boys, all girls.

3. What age range does your school cater for?

4. Policies. What are your current policies and procedures and when were they implemented or last updated for the following?

a) Anti-bullying policy as required by the Education Inspectors Act 2006.
b) Physical Restraint and Intervention Policy.
c) Behaviour and Discipline Policy as per Section 175 of the Education Act 2002.
d) Policies relating to knife crime (either caught carrying or using a knife or implement to resemble a knife also known as a shank whilst in school grounds).
e) Safeguarding (protection of children from other children).
f) Child Protection (protection of children from other children).
g) Whistle-blowing Policy.

5. We would also like to know if you have implemented any powers and policy to search children for weapons. We are aware that the Government has given schools such powers. If so, what is your policy?

6. We would like to know what safeguarding measures are in place at your school to ensure children are not intimidated by teachers. We give example by means of children intimidated not to speak to police / parents / OFSTED or any organisation where the child being intimidated not to speak out would conceal a serious incident that, if the child or children spoke out, would cause detriment to the school and / or its staff. This is written with section 18 of the Youth Justice and Criminal Evidence Act (YJCEA) 1999 in mind.

7. We would like to know over the last 5 years how many incidences of a child found carrying a knife or shank on school premises;

a) When was this?
b) How old was the child?
c) Was this the child’s first time?
d) What action did your school take?
e) Were police involved?
f) What was the outcome?

8. We would like to know over the last 5 years how many incidences of a child found using a knife or shank on school premises where injury or risk of injury occurred;

a) When did this occur?
b) How old was the child?
c) Was this the child’s first time?
d) What action did your school take?
e) Were police involved?
f) What was the outcome?

9. We would like to know if any children identified (obviously restricting their identity) in question 7, caught carrying a knife or shank, are also identified in question 8.

Yours faithfully,

S. Prichard

Dear Beckwith, Alison,

Thank you for confirming. As an advocate of anti knife crime it would be interesting to view your policies to see how they differ from other schools.

Yours sincerely,

S. Prichard
