Police officer driver training

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary,

1)Is there a guideline on how often police officers should retake their standard response police driving test driving test?

2)Is there a law on how often police officers should retake their standard response police driving test driving test?

3)Can I have access to the database Dumfries and Galloway Police use to see when officers last took their standard response police driving test or higher?

4)If not, what percentage of officers have passed their most recent standard response police driving test or higher?

5)Also, what number of officers have and have not passed their most recent standard response police driving test or higher?

6)What is the longest amount of time a current officer has gone without having a standard response police driving test or higher?

7)If a database Dumfries and Galloway Police use to see when officers last took their standard response police driving test or higher does not exist, what are the procedures for finding out if an officer needs to be take their standard response police driving test?

Yours faithfully,

Ollie Gillman

Dear Mr Gillman

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION (SCOTLAND) ACT 2002

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

I refer to your email of 19 February requesting information in relation to
police officer driver training and now write to provide you with the force
response.

Having researched your request I can now confirm the following details:-

1)     The policy within this force is that each officer will be subject
to an assessment drive every five years of their service.

2)     The requirements for assessment drivers for various response
personnel are stipulated within the Road Safety Act 2006 -
[1]http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006...

3)     As the database used by the force contains personal data it is
therefore exempt from disclosure in terms of Section 38(1)(b) of the
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

4)     This process is carried out on a rolling basis and therefore not
all staff have completed the course at this time.  I can confirm that 96%
of staff have passed their re-assessment to date.

5)     122 members have passed and 6 members have failed their test to
date.

6)     For the past 9 years each new recruit who has joined this force has
received a driving course as soon as they return from the Scottish Police
College initial training course.  All operational officers have had a
driving course prior to being allowed to drive a police vehicle.

7)     We have a database.

I trust you find the above information helpful, however if I can be of any
further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

If you are not satisfied with the way in which your request has been
handled, you are entitled in the first instance to request a review of the
decision by contacting me, in writing, detailing the grounds for review
within 40 days of receiving this letter.  A review will then be
facilitated by the Chief Inspector, Complaints and Professional Standards
Unit.  If, after receiving the review panel’s decision, you are still not
satisfied, you have the right of appeal to the Scottish Information
Commissioner.  Contact details are Office of the Scottish Information
Commissioner, Kinburn Castle, Doubledykes Road, St Andrews, Fife, KY16

Dear Margaret,

Thank you for the information.

Please could you tell me how many officers (as a number and as a percentage of total officers trained) took their first test or were reassessed as per the guidelines within the last 5 years.

Yours sincerely,

Ollie Gillman
