Dear Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council,
1. How many public children’s playgrounds were managed and maintained by you at the start of each of the last five financial years (a) 1.4.19, (b) 1.4.20, (c) 1.4.21, (d) 1.4.22 and (e) 1.4.23?
2. What was your spend in each of the last five financial years (18/19) (19/20) (20/21) (21/22) and (22/23) on the maintenance, or improvement or development of children’s playgrounds in your local authority area? If possible please break this figure down into (i) revenue spend and (ii) capital expenditure.
3. How many accidents have been reported to you where people have been injured in public children’s playgrounds for which you have responsibility in each of the last five financial years (18/19) (19/20) (20/21) (21/22) and (22/23)?
4. In relation to accidents in the last financial year (22/23) please provide me with a summary of how each accident took place and the extent of the injury.
5. For each of the last five financial years (18/19) (19/20) (20/21) (21/22) and (22/23) please state how much compensation has been paid to people who were injured in accidents that took place in public children’s playgrounds for which you have responsibility? NOTE: I am interested in when the compensation was paid not when the accident took place or when the claim was lodged.

Request for Information RFI-8172-24 Re:Playgrounds
I write to acknowledge and apologise for the delay in responding to your
request relating to Playgrounds. As you know, the council is required to
respond to all requests for information under the Freedom of Information
Act within 20 working days, unless a ‘qualified exception’ applies that
requires the consideration of the Public Interest.
Walsall Council takes its obligations under this legislation extremely
seriously and I am sorry that in this case we have not met this timescale.

Further to your request for information about Playgrounds, I have all the
information in except Q2, so felt I could send you what I have and then
update you when the other information comes in. I hope that is acceptable
to you.

We managed and maintained 60 play areas each year
2. What was your spend in each of the last five financial years (18/19)
(19/20) (20/21) (21/22) and (22/23) on the maintenance, or improvement or
development of children’s playgrounds in your local authority area? If
possible please break this figure down into (i) revenue spend and (ii)
capital expenditure. Awaiting information

Nil there have been NO insurance claims regarding public children’s
playgrounds in the last five financial years (18/19) (19/20) (20/21)
(21/22) and (22/23) and no compensation has been paid.
