Planning Portal Accessibility issues

Thomas Coward made this Freedom of Information request to Broxbourne Borough Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Broxbourne Borough Council,

For background currently PDFs sent to the council for Broxbourne planning portal are purposefully stripped of readability for screen readers, this is rather controversial and greatly hinders accessibility for blind or vision impaired users.

The planning portal currently has a very low level of accessibility with buttons close together, the font size may be too small, poor rendering on mobile devices and PFDs are not compatible with screen readers as they have been purposefully altered in most cases to remove the ability for them to be searched or read by screen readers.

Please could you provide any information pertaining to the Broxbourne planning portal in regards to planned accessibility upgrades. that will bring it inline with the law by 23 September 2020 (The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018).

Please could you also provide me with a copy of your accessibility statement in relation to the Planning portal.

Yours faithfully,

Thomas Coward

Broxbourne Borough Council

Broxbourne Council,

[1]Broxbourne Borough Council
Broxbourne Borough Council have closed your case BFR000667 due to the
following reason:

"Dear Thomas Coward

Thank you for your request for information, our reference BFR000667,
received on 19/6/20.

Your request has now been considered and the information can be found
below.

Broxbourne Council is committed to making its website accessible, in
accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile
Applications) (No.2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
The Council is currently running a transformation programme which aims
to digitally transform interactions with council services. The main
pages of the website have been upgraded and are fully compliant with the
2018 Regulations. However, the planning application search page is a
bolt on facility commissioned through a third party supplier. This will
therefore be upgraded through phase 2 of the transformation project. We
are consequently in consultation with our supplier to upgrade our
current system to ensure this complies with the legislation.
Unfortunately this has been delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

You may be interested to know that the Council has recently gained
recognition for the most improved website
