Placing care leavers

The request was successful.

Dear Brent Borough Council,

When care leavers move into private rented accommodation which is covered by their housing benefit, does the council cover the cost of deposit? And how often does the council ever get that money back?

How much of the supported accommodation the council uses is covered by housing benefit? (E.g. rent at YMCAs is covered with the council paying extra for support, but with other types of supported accomm. is the council paying the rent as well as the support?)

Are most care leavers housed in private rented or social housing before they are closed to the service? If they are in a placement where the council pays their rent prior to being closed, what happens to them?

How do the placements/social housing team and the leaving care team work together? What is the structure and who is involved in placing a care leaver?

Yours faithfully,

Eloise

Dear ‎Ms. Acland‏

Freedom of Information Act 2000

Unfortunately I cannot identify the information you have requested from
the details you have provided. To enable me to respond to your request,
please could you clarify.

"When care leavers move into private rented accommodation which is covered
by their housing benefit, does the council cover the cost of deposit? And
how often does the council ever get that money back?"

We do not pay a deposit as for Children and Young People it is a
commissioned service.
Deposit would possibly only arise if the young person has there own
tenancy in the private sector.

The 20 working day timetable for responding to your request is halted
whilst we await the further details requested. If these are not received
within 40 working days of this letter the request will be closed.

I will not be able to take this matter further without this extra
information from you. Please let me know by 26/02/2017.

If I do not hear from you within the timeframe provided, I shall take it
that you do not wish to pursue this request and will consider the request
closed.

Dear Nigel Chapman,

Apologies for the lack of clarity. By the following:

"When care leavers move into private rented accommodation which is covered
by their housing benefit, does the council cover the cost of deposit? And
how often does the council ever get that money back?"

I am trying to find out what proportion of care leavers move into full independence (be it social housing or private rented) before their case is closed aged 21 (or 25 if in education).

Are there some that move into private tenancies? If so, how many? Of the care leavers who do move into a tenancy in the private sector, is their rent usually covered by housing benefit? And would the council pay the initial deposit on their private rented tenancy? If the council does pay this deposit, would they ever be likely to get it back?

I hope that clarifies the request. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do!

Yours sincerely,

Eloise
