Placement Fees

Mr Paul made this Freedom of Information request to Ulster University

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Ulster University should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Ulster University,

Placement years are currently charged at £2070, which is significantly more than other universities, albeit it is the maximum a university is allowed to charge.

Can you please provide a breakdown as to how that money is spent? How much money is generated per annum by these means? And what was the justification by management for having to charge so much compared to other local universities?

Yours faithfully,

Mr Paul

Dear foi,

It has now been nearly a month since your last reply when you stated you were prioritising my request and would respond without further delay. This is definitely a significant further delay - Is the university is trying to hide this information?
I expect a reply with the information I requested, specifically related to placement year students rather than general information for the entire university across all faculties and year groups.
Please also include details regarding the internal review which should have been carried out by now.

Yours sincerely,

Mr Paul

Ulster University.

the whole group of universities?

The supplied figures is income generated per annum from placement fees for
Ulster University.

2.    Is the breakdown for the university expenditure specific to
placement students rather than for the whole university? If not, can you
please provide details for the university expenditure specifically for
placement years?

The breakdown in the Financial Statements is for the whole University.
The services provided to the placement year students are varied and
across multi-Faculty/Department and the University does not record this
separately within its Finance system.

3.    Can you please provide the justification by management for charging
so much to placement students compared to other local universities? (This
was part of the original request but may have been overlooked).

Ulster University provides substantial support and accreditation for
placement which differentiates from other placement provision within the
sector.  Ulster views placement as a key component in preparing our
students for successful future careers and graduate outcomes.

The placement fee incorporates:

-          A placement support programme in Year 2 of study which includes
the promotion of opportunities for placement and support for securing
these opportunities.  This programme also covers important matters such as
Health and Safety for placement.

-          All academic and professional support for the duration of the
placement, this includes the appointment of an academic supervisor and at
least one visit from this supervisor during the placement period.  Staff
also engage with the employers and students if matters/issues arise.  This
approach ensures each student gets the maximum value from placement.

-          Students are registered on the Ulster University Diploma in
Professional Practice which as a co-terminus Award is assessed and
feedback provided to students.  Students have access to all University
systems and support for the duration of this.  The accreditation of
placement ensures students are aware of the skills, experience and
knowledge they have gained from placement and can transfer this to the
next stage of their career development.

-          Students are briefed on all these aspects as part of placement
preparation including the costs/fees associated with placement year
