Placement exposure to specialities in Medicine

The request was successful.

Dear University of Warwick,

My enquiry relates to your A101 Medicine course.

I am seeking information on:

- How much time medical undergraduates spend on "placement" in each of the medical specialities as part of their clinical education.

I would be very grateful if this information could be provided as accurately as is possible - in months, weeks or days depending on the length of time.

I would prefer if this information could be broken down as much as possible - so if, for example, you have a broadly titled 'Neurology, Ophthalmology and Psychiatry' rotation, please provide information broken down by speciality (e.g. Neurology - 1 month, Psychiatry - 1 month, Ophthalmology - 1 week.)

If you are unable to provide me with this information to the level of detail requested, I would appreciate it if you could give me the information with as much detail as is possible.

Thank you very much for your assistance - I really appreciate it.

Yours faithfully,

Ms Alexander

Dear infocompliance, Resource,

Thank you very much for your reply, and for directing me to your website.

If possible, would you be able to clarify for me what specialities are covered in the following placements, and the time commitment breakdown within the 6 weeks (if known) (e.g. Care of Surgical Patient may include Gastroenterology 2 weeks, etc.):

- Care of the Medical Patient
- Care of the Surgical Patient
- Acute Medicine

If this is not known in full, I would appreciate it if you could give me as much detail as is available. I really appreciate your help, thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Ms Alexander

After seeking clarification and providing you with information available

- you provided the further following information:

Thank you very much for your reply, and for directing me to your website.

If this is not known in full, I would appreciate it if you could give me
as much detail as is available.

Our curriculum is integrated, so that blocks such as Care of the Medical
Patient includes learning opportunities (and learning outcomes) in most
areas of medicine, and there is considerable overlap with learning
opportunities in Acute Medicine and General Practice.  It is therefore
impossible to accurately define an amount of time (beyond the 6 week
timeframe of each block) that an individual student will spend in each
specialty.  Importantly, Care of the Surgical Patient includes general
surgery and anaesthetics, as well as some elements of specialist surgery.
Specialisms such as ENT and ophthalmology are integrated across several
blocks, including Care of the Medical Patient, Care of the Surgical
Patient, Acute Medicine and General Practice.

I trust that this information will be helpful to you. Should you require
any clarification, please contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Ian Rowley
