Dear General Medical Council,
Would it be possible to know --
1. The percentage of candidates who has failed Plab part2 after 4 attempts from sept 2016
2. what fraction of the above candidates then return for an additional attempt and pass.
3. What fraction of the plab failed candidates gain registration by alternate route like membership exam or sponsorship

Yours faithfully,
Mun

Dear Mun

Your information access request – F19/10359/SJ

Thank you for your email dated 30 August asking for information about the
PLAB test. I’ve considered your request under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 (FOIA).

 1. I can confirm that there were 13,277 candidates who sat PLAB 2 between
31 August 2016 – 31 August 2019, and of these, 11 of the candidates
were setting the test for the 4th time.
 2. Of these candidates 49 failed, this equates to 0.37% of all doctors
who sat PLAB in the period and 42.61% of those that took the test for
the 4th time. 2 went on to sit the test a 5th time and none of these
passed.
 3. It is not possible to gain registration via an alternative route after
failing PLAB.

You may find it useful to know that from September 2017 doctors were
limited to 4 attempts to take PLAB 2. There was a period of grace that
doctors were given around this time and tests already booked that exceeded
the 4 attempt limit were honoured. Following this change, doctors can
apply for a fifth and final attempt of PLAB 1 or PLAB 2. They can do this
12 months after their 4^th attempt and they must be able to provide
evidence of learning during this time. Evidence can come from either
clinical practice or a post graduate qualification. Further information
about what is expected from this can be found here:
[1]https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-...

We will not allow a further attempt at PLAB after this.

I hope that you will find this information useful, if you have any further
queries, please contact me on the details below.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sadie Jones (0161 250 6889),
Thank you for your response. Just wondering is there any typo in the total number who attempted for 4th time!
Its given as 11 but total number who failed 4th attempt is 49. So those attempting 4 times must be around 100-110?

Thanking you
Mun
