The request was successful.

Dear Cambridge City Council,

I note that in January 2009 there was a discussion regarding the cost of maintaining Pindar services on midsummer common. Does your council still employ a Pindar and if so what are his/her duties?

Yours faithfully,

Andrew Szilva

Emma Farrington, Cambridge City Council

Dear Mr Szilva,

In your Freedom of Information request dated 4th August, you asked the
following question:

Does your council still employ a Pinder and if so what are his/her duties

Cattle graze the Commons in Cambridge and we provide a Pinder service from
1^st April to 31^st October each year.

Commoners have long had rights to grazing on Cambridge Commons. These
rights were registered under the commons registration act 1965 and section
7 of Cambridge City Council Act 1985.

The Cambridge City Council Act 1985 allows the Council to prescribe the
procedure for the registration of commoners entitles to graze animals, to
set the number of grazing animals, and to make a reasonable charge.

The Pinder and team from the start of the Grazing season are responsible
for the care of grazing animals to ensure their well being in liaison with
the holders of grazing permissions.

He would check stock fencing, gates, grids and grills as part of his
maintenance duties and move cattle.

If you are not happy with the way in which your request has been dealt
with please contact Adrian Ash, Interim Head of Service, Streets and Open
Spaces ([1][email address]).  If you are still not satisfied
with the way your request has been dealt with you can contact the
Information Commissioner.

The Information Commissioner’s address is:

Wycliffe House

Water Lane

Wilmslow

Cheshire SK9 5AF

Yours sincerely

Emma Linney

Dear Emma Farrington,

Thank you for your detailed response to the FOI request, which is much appreciated. I am delighted to hear that your council is continuing the historic tradition of employing a Pindar and may it long continue.

Yours sincerely,

Andrew Szilva
