Physician associate application
Dear Queen Mary University of London,
I am writing to you regarding the application and interview scoring for Physician Associate course . With regards to the weighting of both the personal statement and the references how exactly are these considered and scored to offer a place for interview, what is the cut off for interview and how many applicants who applied in 2020 and 2021 were offered a place for interview, from which academic background and degree classification were candidates selected for interview and how much weighting on clinical experience was a necessary factor when it came to offering a place for interview, if you could provide specific data on the number of applicants and of those how many were offered an interview then that would be ideal?
Next, I would like to know what the cut-off scores were for securing both an offer for Physician Associate course and a place on the waiting list, in both 2020 and 2021. Did everyone who met the cut off for offers get an offer, or were other criteria used to calculate whether to offer them a place? How many interviews were held and how many offers were given out? Second, I would like to know the distribution of interview scores; ie how many people got each score for both 2020 and 2021.
I would like to know the scoring criteria for the interview stations. Please can you include a generic scoring matrix/scoring sheet for the the stations/ panel. Should the different types of stations have different generic mark sheets, please attach one of each. Please note that I am not asking for specific interview questions or answers, just generic schemes in the style of the one you have already published.
Yours faithfully,
Miss Khan

Dear Rabhia Khan,
Thank you for your email of 24th April.
I am pleased to provide the following responses.
MSc Physician Associate studies have been running at Queen Mary University
of London since January 2017. We use a scoring system to rank applications
received for this programme. Since 2019/20, all applications for the
programme were scored based on a points system by the Central Admissions
Office. The prerequisite for applying for the MSc Physician Associate
programme is that candidates must have completed BSc Honours degree in
life sciences or a healthcare-related qualification. We do not offer any
weighting to candidates’ prior clinical experience. Applicants are scored
in the following categories: BSc (honours) grades, postgraduate
qualification (MSc/PhD).
Academic performance scoring 2020/21:
Academic performance Score
MSc or PhD (one point for highest qualification) 1
BSc (Honours) 1st class 3
BSc (Honours) 2:1 class 2
BSc (Honours) 2:2 class 1
For 2020/21 admission, the programme offered 20 places. The University
received 497 applications and 74 candidates were invited to attend
interview. During 2019/20, the university received 329 applications, out
of which 180 candidates were invited to interview and offered 55 places.
Candidates who are invited to attend interview were assessed on 5 domains
which underpin NHS and GMC professional values and behaviours expected
from a qualified healthcare professional joining the NHS workforce. Each
candidate invited for interview are interviewed by two members of the
faculty from Queen Mary. The interview questions are scored in each
category below and candidates can score up to 4 points. Scores from the
two interviewers are added and ranked.
Generic scoring matrix (2019-2020):
INSIGHT & TEAMWORK 8 scored 2 17 scored 3 15 scored 4 3 scored 1
RESILIANCE 14 scored 2 18 scored 3 8 scored 4 3 scored 1
INTEGRITY 11 scored 2 19 scored 3 7 scored 4 5 scored 1
ETHICAL 7 scored 2 23 scored 3 10 scored 4 3 scored 1
COMMUNICATION SKILLS 6 scored 2 22 scored 3 11 scored 4 4 scored 1
OVERALL EVALUATION 11 scored 2 18 scored 3 9 scored 4 5 scored 1
Based on the scores candidates achieved at their interview, candidates
were ranked and the top 37 candidates were either made offers or placed on
the waiting list during 2019/20 and 2020/21.
