Dear Mr P A Kureshi

Thank you for submitting an FOI request, requesting information from the
University of Warwick. In order to comply with your request, we would be
grateful if you could please clarify the following:

o When you refer to the years 2017 to 2021, please confirm that you want
us to look at the admissions cycles for entry into the following
academic years: 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22?

o In relation to question 2 of your request, please confirm what is
meant by "successful applicants"?

o In relation to question 7 of your request, please confirm what is
meant by "applicants who accepted their offer each year" - are you
referring to enrolments here?

In addition to the above clarification points, having reviewed Questions
3, 4, 5 and 6 of your request, the University estimates that compliance
with your request would exceed the appropriate costs limit under S.12
Freedom of Information Act 2000. Public authorities are not obliged to
work past the appropriate costs limit under section 12(1) of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000. This is currently £450, which equates to 18 hours
of staff time calculated at £25 an hour as set out in the Freedom of
Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations
2004.

The University believes that Questions 3, 4, 5 and 6 of your request would
exceed the costs limit because the information the University holds is not
recorded by GCSE grades or predicted A level grades - in order to obtain
the requested information, we would need to conduct a manual search of
each student file which would certainly take over 18 hours to complete and
would therefore exceed the cost limit. It is therefore advised that you
submit a refined request.

The University is obliged to offer guidance as to what would be manageable
under the costs limit so with that in mind, it would be able to provide
answers to Questions 1 -2 and 7 – 10 only. If this information would be of
interest to you then when you provide the clarification requested above
please also submit a refined request stating that you are happy to proceed
on the basis we have suggested.

If you do submit a refined request, the University will treat it as a
substitute request to your original request and the 20 working day
statutory time limit will begin from the date your refined request is
received. In the absence of a refined request, the University will send an
official response to your original request, engaging the costs limit
exemption under section 12(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000
within the 20 working day limit. Please also be advised that the
University will be unable to proceed with your request until you have
provided the requested clarifications and the 20 working day statutory
time limit does not begin until clarification has been received.

Kind Regards

Legal and Compliance Services

Dear infocompliance, Resource,

Thank you for your response. Below are the appropriate refinements and clarifications to my request.

In terms of question 1 of my original request, I would like to confirm that I do want information regarding the admissions cycles for entry into the following academic years: 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22.

In relation to question 2 of my original request, by "successful applicants", I mean all individuals who received a conditional or unconditional offer from the university. To clarify this further, "unsuccessful applicants" would refer to those individuals who were not given a conditional or unconditional offer from the university.

With question 7 of my original request, by "applicants that accepted their offer each year", I am referring to enrolments.

With respect to your response, I am appreciative of the fact that questions 3-6 of my original request would demand too much time from the staff involved, so I would like to make a refined request. This is in awareness of the new statutory time involved.

My refined request is as follows: (for the Philosophy BA in academic years 2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20, 2020/21, and 2021/22)

1. The number of applicants for the course each year.
2. The number of successful applicants (i.e. those with conditional or unconditional offers) for the course each year.
3. The number of applicants enrolled each year.
4. The number of applicants from state schools.
5. The number of applicants from independent schools.
6. The number of applicants from other types of schools (compared to state and independent).

Yours sincerely,

Mr P A Kureshi

Response

Please find the requested information in the attached spreadsheet titled
‘FOI Request – F090.21-22’.

Data Notes:

o Please note that the University records more school categories than
just ‘State’ and ‘Independent’, therefore a full breakdown has been
provided by category type.
o The category ‘Other’ includes both students who have applied
independently of their school, and students whose school type has
fewer than five applications and/or offers for that year of entry.
o The enrolment numbers are based on snapshot data taken on 31^st
October in each of the given academic years and correct as of that
date and includes new students only (intake numbers).

I trust that this information will be helpful to you, however, should you
be dissatisfied with the way in which your request has been handled you
can request an internal review within 40 working days of our response and,
