PFOA & PFOS levels in Northumbria Waetr Limited Water supplies

You only have a right in law to access information about the environment from this authority

We're waiting for Paul to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Northumbrian Water Limited,
Could you please advise on the levels on Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFA's) in water supplies in the north-east of England.

The EPA in America has set an advisory level of 70 part per trillion.

Does Northumbrian water check supplies to consumers for these chemicals, and at what intervals

Do they have a set limit n what is considered above a safe level for consumption by individuals?

Do you have STEL (short time exposure limits) & LTEL (long time exposure limits), both for consumers drinking the water and employees that may be exposed to higher concentrations?

Yours faithfully,

EIR, Northumbrian Water Limited

Dear Paul

Thank you for your request for information which we received on 12 January. We have considered your request under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004.

This request is a duplicate of your request of 3 January, which is available online at:

As such we will not be responding to this, your more recent request, separately.

We have applied the exception in Regulation 12(4)(b) to your request, that is, “a public authority may refuse to disclose information to the extent that the request for information is manifestly unreasonable.” In applying this exception, Northumbrian Water has assessed the public interest in maintaining the exception, and balanced this against the public interest in disclosing the information. We have determined that the former outweighs the latter in this instance, which is why your request is being declined.

Please be assured that, as previously advised, we are working to respond to your earlier request and this will be provided as soon as possible and no later than 31 January.

If you are unhappy with the handling of your request or with this decision, you have the right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be submitted within 40 working days of the date of this response, so by 11 March, and should be sent via www.whatdotheyknow.com, to [Northumbrian Water request email] or by post to the Information Access Team, Northumbrian Water, Abbey Road, Pity Me, DH1 5FJ.

If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the internal review, you can apply, without charge, to the Information Commissioner, who will consider whether we have complied with our obligations under the Regulations, and can require Northumbrian Water to remedy any problems. You can find out more about how to do this, and the Regulations in general, on the Information Commissioner’s website at www.ico.org.uk. Complaints to the Information Commissioner can be made via the “report a concern” section of the Information Commissioner’s website.

If you would prefer to write to the Information Commissioner, she can be contacted at the Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF.

If you have any queries about your request or our response, or any other queries about environmental information, please contact us using the details above.

Yours sincerely

Information Access Team
