I would like to make a request in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act (FOI).

During the period 01 January 2007 to 01 January 2009:

1. How many Pet Shop Licences were issued?

2. How many Dangerous wild animals licences were issued?

3. How many Dog breeding licences were issued?

4. How often are inspections carried out in relation to these licences?

5. Have any pet shops been investigated due to complaints, and poor Animal Welfare Conditions? If so, what was the outcome?

I refer to your request for information in accordance with the Freedom of
Information legislation.  Details of the responses to your questions are:

 

During the period 01 January 2007 to 01 January 2009:

1. How many Pet Shop Licences were issued?    

During 2007 Grant = 6; Renewal = 17; Variation = 1.

During 2008 Grant = 2;  Renewal = 19.

2. How many Dangerous wild animals licences were issued?  None.

3. How many Dog breeding licences were issued?  None.

4. How often are inspections carried out in relation to these licences? 
Annually.

5. Have any pet shops been investigated due to complaints, and poor Animal
Welfare Conditions? If so, what was the outcome?

During 2007 – 14 Complaints were received about the holders of Pet Shop
Licence.   In each case the premises were visited as part of the
investigation into the allegation.  One prosecution was submitted to the
courts.

During 2008 – 11 Complaints were received about the holders of Pet Shop
Licences.  In each case the premises were visited as part of the
investigation into the allegations.  It was not possible to substantiate 9
of the complaints, in respect of the other issues 1 formal caution and 1
letter of advice were issued.
