Department for Education

Dear Sir/Madam
Thank you for your email dated 1 December about the use of your personal
email address.

The Teachers’ Pensions database supplied the email addresses which were
used to send the recent direct communication from Ministers.  To improve
the service to members and respond to the increase in requests from
teachers for more factual information about their pension, we have updated
the Teachers’ Pensions Scheme database with email data held by the General
Teaching Council for England. The transfer of data in this way is allowed
under s14 of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998. This
correspondence has come from Ministers given the level of current
interest.

In future, direct communications about the detail of individual pensions
will be sent from Teachers’ Pensions. In the next few weeks, Teachers’
Pensions will be sending scheme members an email with details of how to
register for updates or opt out of the email update service. Those who
sign up will be asked to validate their email addresses, which Teachers’
Pensions will store for ongoing communications. Those who wish to opt out
can do so at this point.
Yours sincerely
