Personal Beliefs and Medical Practice

Helen Bright made this Freedom of Information request to General Medical Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear General Medical Council,

1. The current guidance is here and dated 2008
http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/ethical_g...

Would you have the copy of the previous guidance on this matter?

2. The copy valid in 2003. If GMC did not have one on religious belief what was the valid Good Medical Practice in 2003 and 2007?

Yours faithfully,

Dr Helen Bright

Dear Dr Bright

Thank you for your email dated 23 February 2011, in which you request our
previous guidance on Personal Beliefs and Medical Practice, in particular
our guidance in the years 2007 and 2003.

In response to your request from November 2006, our guidance can be found
in our publication Good Medical Practice (attached) at paragraphs 7, 8 and
33.

From 2001 - 2006, the guidance was contained in Good Medical Practice
(2001) at paragraphs 5 and 6 which I copy below:

5. The investigations or treatment you provide or arrange must be based on
your clinical judgement of patients' needs and the likely effectiveness of
the treatment. You must not allow your views about patients' lifestyle,
culture, beliefs, race, colour, gender, sexuality, disability, age, or
social or economic status, to prejudice the treatment you provide or
arrange. You must not refuse or delay treatment because you believe that
patients' actions have contributed to their condition.

6. If you feel that your beliefs might affect the advice or treatment you
provide, you must explain this to patients, and tell them of their right
to see another doctor.

I hope the above information is useful.

If I can be of any further assistance please let me know.

Kind regards

Louise
