Permitting a new laundry product with known harmful long term effects on aquatic environment to be sold

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs did not have the information requested.

Dear Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs,

1, Can you please tell me how you establish the effects of a new laundry or cleaning product on the aquatic environment before allowing its sale and supply?

2. Can you tell me when you authorised the sale and supply of Dettol Antibacterial Laundry Cleanser in the UK.

3. The publically available safety advice on this product is that it is; ' Harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects' What research did you do to ensure that it would not adversely affect the treatment of sewage and waste water and would not adversely effect the water courses into which the effluent from sewage treatment, and occasionally untreated sewage and waste will flow?

4. Did you consult with the water industry or the Environment Agency or any of the other stakeholders before making your decision and if so, what were their responses. Who else did you consult?

5. As a duty of continuing care, what have you done to monitor the actual effects on the environment and public health of introducing this harmful product and similar products?

Yours faithfully,

Ashley Smith
