Permission to metal detect

We're waiting for Steve Piper to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear Suffolk Coastal District Council,

I am writing to enquire about the possibility of being allowed to metal detect on public land, woodland and parks. I would like to know if there are any laws regarding metal detecting on council owned land and if there is any kind of permit required to detect on public land, woodland or parks as there is with other council areas.

I would also like to enquire about a map of such areas?

I am a member of NCMD (www.ncmd.co.uk) so am fully insured and have civil liability insurance up to £10,000,000 and would adhere to all given rules. I also would clear any rubbish I come across, helping to keep our countryside and parks clean.

Yours faithfully,
Steve

Dear Sara,

Many thanks for your reply, so regarding your comment...

"Suffolk Coastal District Council has no byelaws in place relating to metal detecting on council owned land, and can confirm no permit is required. We are unable to provide a map of such areas, however if there is land you wish to metal detect on we are happy to check this is land owned by the council. "

Can I assume that I will be able to detect on Suffolk Coastal District parks and amenity land?

As I have stated, I am a member of NCMD (www.ncmd.co.uk) so am fully insured and have civil liability insurance up to £10,000,000 and would adhere to all given rules. I also would clear any rubbish I come across, helping to keep our countryside and parks clean.

FOI, Suffolk Coastal District Council

Dear Mr Piper,

the recreation ground in Witnesham does not belong to the Council.

As it hasn't been registered on the Land Registry, that most likely means it has never changed hands.
We suggest that you contact the local parish council for Witnesham and ask them, as they should have the records and should be able to confirm if it is owned by them or not.
Contact details for all the parish councils in Suffolk Coastal & Waveney districts can be found on our website at http://www.eastsuffolk.gov.uk/yourcounci...

The football pitch does not belong to the Council.
You can search Land Registry for the owner. The Title reference is SK318640.
However, you might be able to save some time by contacting the school adjacent to the football pitch as it is likely to belong to them.

Sara
