People touching out twice at Finsbury Park
Dear Transport for London,
A new entrance was recently opened at Finsbury Park Station leading to Goodwin Street. As well as passage ways to the Underground lines there is access to the ungated subways beneath the National Rail platforms. This means that if gates are in operation on the NR platforms users may have to touch in twice, or touch out twice. Touching in twice is fine because the NR gates are set up for continuation entry, but out twice is a problem.
Please can you provide a total count per day of the number of PAYG users who touch out on any NR platform gate and then touch out at the new gateline within 5 minutes. Please exclude anyone who touches a validator in the subway in between. If possible, please start the report from the date that the new entrance opened in December 2019.
Yours faithfully,
Mike Whitaker

Dear Mike Whitaker
Our ref: FOI-3549-1920/GH
Thank you for your request received by Transport for London (TfL) on 17
February 2020 asking for information about people touching out twice at
Finsbury Park.
Your request has been considered in accordance with the requirements of
the Freedom of Information Act and our information access policy. I can
confirm we hold some of the information you require.
We only have Oyster data for the last eight weeks. On that basis, between
1^st Jan 2020 and 28^th Feb 2020 we saw 525 instances of an Oyster pay as
you go exit at Finsbury Park National Rail, followed by a further exit at
the Goodwin Street Underground gateline, an average of 8.9 per day.
A number of contactless payment cards also made this sequence of exits at
the station, however their journeys were automatically adjusted and the
correct fare was charged.
Whereas the new gateline enables this sequence of exits to be made, it was
possible to do the same thing at either of the other two Underground
gatelines prior to this one being installed, in addition to the possible
exit via the ungated exit into the bus station.
Please see the attached information sheet for details of your right to
appeal as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would
like to re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely
