Response to request

Dear Tushna,

Thank-you for your enquiry (set out below) for information under the
Freedom of Information Act 2000. I am able to provide the following
information:

1. What degree of peer review do you use for all application processes?

Peer review is used for all schemes and involves the use of independent
referees, specialist assessment panels where appropriate and peer review
panels.

2. What exact peer review guide do you follow [apart from the on-line
Joint Electronic Submission Je-S) system]with reference to grants,
schemes, refereed journals and proposals that people apply for?

STFC provides the following links to the guidelines on peer review:
www.stfc.ac.uk/Grants/ResGr/PRev/PeerRev... (STFC guidance & panel
web-based forms) www.rcuk.ac.uk/research/peer/default.htm (Cross Council
Overview of Peer Review) www.rcuk.ac.uk/aboutrcuk/efficiency/tcfec (Peer
Review FAQs and Guidance)
http://www.stfc.ac.uk/rgh/rghDisplay2.as... (Assessment
Procedures in the fEC Research Grants Handbook)
http://www.stfc.ac.uk/Grants/ResGr/FundO... (STFC Funding
Opportunities page which lists the various panels & links into their
specific guidance)

3. What percent of grants and proposals have been
a) delayed
b) denied
c) accepted by your peer review panel in 2008 and 2009?

STFC does not capture statistics on delayed proposals.

In terms of proposals accepted or denied, this information is published
on our website at
www.stfc.ac.uk/webstatistics/psData.aspx..., however, the
success rates for financial year 2008/09 are incomplete as the Particle
Physics Experiment grants are still within the Peer Review process.
These will be published in due course.

Under the Freedom of Information legislation STFC has a duty to advise
and assist and I hope the information we are providing is of help to
you. The text of the Freedom of Information Act, can be found at
