Pay Policy
Dear Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills,
Please publish OFSTED pay policy for all inspectors, specifically highlighting:
- pay arrangements
- bonus arrangements
In relation to bonus arrangements, please advise on:
- Maximum and Minimum amounts
- rationale of these payments, including KPI and Targets used to issue
Furthermore, regarding bonuses, over the past 3 year please provide 'total' level of bonuses issued to 'all' lead inspectors.
Then, breakdown this total to total level of bonuses issues to all inspectors who have issued:
- Outstanding Judgements
- Good Judgements
- RI Judgements
- Inadequate Judgement

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills's handling of my FOI request 'Pay Policy'.
(i) The main request has been avoided/not answered, I requested a copy of the PAY POLICY, not just a snap shot of pay bands.
Furthermore, you have failed to confirm:
(ii) total bonuses paid (as per request)
(iii) the correlation between ofsted judgements and bonuses paid, even if there is no bonus (official or otherwise) for ofsted judgement
Items (i) and (ii) are the main key points not addressed.

Thank you for your email.
I apologise if our letter was unclear. In response to the points you have raised:
i) We do not have a pay policy for inspectors. HMI are employed by Ofsted and as such receive a salary as set out in the tables provided in our response. This is not linked to performance or type of inspection in any way.
ii) As stated in our letter we do not hold information on in-year rewards (bonuses) in a way that allows us to break it down by the role an inspector has played in inspections, ie lead inspector as specified in your request.
iii) I can confirm that neither inspector pay or in-year rewards are linked to inspection judgements.
I hope that this has responded more fully to your queries. If you still wish to have an internal review of our response please advise us along with your reasons for the request.
