Dear Mr Walden
Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
regarding the pavement on Queen Street( outside Queen's Arcade) received
on 07 June 2010.
We have considered your request and enclose the following information:
o The paving has been laid twice. The initial work took place on 15^th
February for 2 weeks. The second commenced 7^th June 2010 for 1 week
o The area was selected as a trial to attempt to identify the ongoing
issues with the movement of paving on Queen Street.
The initial work placed a horizontal drain under the paving and utilised a
high strength grout to joint the paving to minimise movements in the
paving slabs. When the works complete the area was exposed to
trafficking. Unfortunately the use of high strength jointing grout
created a single slab that created shear stresses in the slabs and caused
the surface of the slabs to break-up.
The second work replaced the damaged slabs and replaced the mortar joints
with sand and a sealant.
o The name of the contractors or internal unit involved in the works on
each occasion was
1. Alun Griffiths Contracting Ltd.
2. Griff Davies Ltd.
o The costs incurred by Cardiff Council respectively were as follows
