Patients with dental problems at A&E departments

The request was partially successful.

Hello,

Please can I request the following information under the Freedom of Information Act:

1) In the financial year 2018-19, how many patients presented at your A&E departments (to include major A&E departments, minor injuries units and walk-in centres) with dental health problems?
Of these:
a) Of the patients presenting with dental health problems, how many received treatment at the hospital during that visit?
b) Of the patients presenting with dental health problems, can the numbers please be broken down by type of problem e.g. toothache, loss of teeth, bleeding from the mouth.
c) Of the patients presenting with dental health problems, can the numbers please be broken down by age of the patient e.g. 0-9, 10-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79, 80-89, 90+
d) Of the patients presenting with dental health problems, how many were not registered with an NHS dentist?

2) Can we please get the figures above, but for the following financial years (separately):
2014-15
2015-16
2016-17
2017-18
2019-20 to Jan 1st 2020.

If the above request cannot be accommodated within cost limits, please can you provide me with advice and assistance on how I may refine my request.

Kind regards,

Claire Wilde

Dear Claire Wilde

Clarification Required

19FOI523– Freedom of Information Request

We refer to your request for information made under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000, received by us on 07/01/2020.

In order to process this request, we require clarification as follows:

The Trust wishes to establish what constitutes treatment.

The Trust could for example

·         Recommend treatment or pathway to care

·         Prescribe a tablet

·         Send the patient to a dental access centre.  We are not
commissioned to provide dental care.  This would be the Dental Access
Centre which forms part of Livewell Southwest at
[5]https://www.livewellsouthwest.co.uk/comm...
and
[6]https://www.livewellsouthwest.co.uk/chil...

·         Our Emergency department not only deals with its local
population, but also a regional trauma centre treating patients with a
complex range of facial injuries following trauma; and for which tooth
care may form a small part of that patient’s care.  The difficulty in such
cases is that not all treatments are recorded within the electronic record
nor whether any treatment related to dental care or other injury received
during trauma.

·         Some interventions would only be recorded in paper- based
clinical records preventing us filtering relevant facts

Can I be clear what you are defining as treatment and the scope of your
request and we will do our best to provide an appropriate response?
Please feel free to telephone and discuss this email with the FOI Manager
using the number provided.

Please note that the 20 working-day clock will not commence until we have
received the necessary clarity, as outlined above. If we do not hear from
you within two months, we will close your request. Should you require
information after this date, a new request must be submitted.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Hello,

Happy to clarify.

By treatment I would mean medical intervention on-site. This could include anyone being given a prescription or being patched up, but to exclude anyone simply being signposted to services elsewhere.

I hope this helps,

Kind regards,
Claire Wilde
