Malcolm Macgregor

Dear Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust,

I would like information on the use of private taxis to convey patients to care facilities within the past 12 months

1. How many patients (total number and percentage) were referred to the taxi service following face-to-face assessment?
2. How many patients (total number and percentage) were referred to the taxi service following remote assessment by a clinician in the clinical contact center or similar?
2a. Of those referred by the CCC, how many were following a GP/HCP request for transportation (total number and percentage of all GP/HCP admissions)?
3. What is the overall total number of patients conveyed by taxi
4. What is the overall percentage of patients conveyed by taxi
5. How many serious/adverse incidents have been reported related directly to the transportation of patients by taxi

Yours faithfully,

Malcolm Macgregor

Dear Malcolm Macgregor,

The Trust are currently processing your request but require some clarification on the points below:

Q1. How many patients (total number and percentage) were referred to the taxi service following face-to-face assessment?
Could you please confirm whether you require -
a) the number of incidents where a taxi arrives on scene, regardless of whether they then take the patient to hospital or not (what we would call a 'Referred to taxi service')?
b) the number of incidents where a taxi conveys the patient to hospital?
And as a percentage of what? – of all verified incidents, all responded to incidents, all incidents that had a face-to-face assessment?

2. How many patients (total number and percentage) were referred to the taxi service following remote assessment by a clinician in the clinical contact centre or similar?
Same as Q1 above, is this for the number 'referred to taxi service' or the number conveyed that you require?
Again, as a percentage of what? - of all verified incidents, all responded to incidents, all Clinical Desk referrals?

I will await your response. Please note that your request will be held until clarification is received.

Regards

Dear Jeff Prescott (Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust - 020),

For Q1 I would like the total number of patients actually conveyed to hospital by taxi following face-to-face assessment (as opposed to simply "referred" to taxi service). The percentage should be expressed as a percentage of all patients conveyed to hospital by any means after face to face assessment.

For Q2 I would like the total number of patients actually conveyed to hospital by taxi following remote assessment (as opposed to simply "referred" to taxi service). The percentage should be expressed as a percentage of all clinical desk referrals.

Yours sincerely,
Malcolm Macgregor
