Unfortunately, this is not very helpful. The bottom line is that the DWP does not hold sufficient data about fraud in the benefits case load. This would explain why they have used the same figures for about 20 years.

Why don't you make a new request asking for the DWP research into such fraud, both how they collected the data and how it was analysed. At least then you'll know what level of data they actually collect.

Thank you Harry, that is a good idea. Currently I am putting the same questions to the LAs who should have the information. But I will follow-up on your suggestion.
