Paper tickets and data stored on the magnetic stripe

The request was refused by East Coast Main Line Company Limited.

Dear East Coast Main Line Company Limited,

I would like to make a FOI request regarding paper tickets.

- What year was the first magnetic stripe ticket used by National Rail?

- Is the current magnetic stripe low-coercivity or high-coercivity?

- What is the storage capacity of the magnetic stripe? e.g. 192 bits?

- How many tracks does the magnetic stripe have?

- What information does the magnetic stripe store? A list of all data fields preferably (excluding those fields exempt under section 31(a) and section 43(2) of the FOIA).

- Is the information on the magnetic stripe encrypted?

- Do the ticket barriers store any data from the magnetic stripe? If so for what purposes and for how long?

Yours faithfully,

Joshua Garnham
