Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

The request was successful.

Dear Colchester Borough Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

Mike Fawcett, Colchester Borough Council

Dear Requester

I am now able to respond to your Freedom of Information request logged on
16 October under reference 345681.

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

2,370

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

£36,000 pa

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

All offices use recycling bins; paper must not be mixed with general
waste.  Paper and card collected from Council offices is not weighed
separately from paper and card collected elsewhere in the Borough.

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

Printing and copying has been reduced by 25% and the number of letters
sent has been reduced by 52,000  in the first two quarters of 2017/18
compared to the same period last year.  Customers and others are
encouraged to contact the Council by email rather than letter.

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?

The Council's Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2015-2020 (ESS) sets a
target to cut carbon emissions by 40% compared to a baseline set in 2008.
