Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

The request was successful.

Dear Bury Metropolitan Borough Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

Nacarlo, Jessica, Bury Metropolitan Borough Council

Dear A R Shaw,

Request for Information - Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA)

I write further to your e-mail received by the Council on 11.10.17 where
you made a request for information with regards to Paper Usage.

The Council’s response to your request is as follows;

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

We only have the information for the Reprographics Unit, not the whole
council.

A4 Paper x 4270 reams

A3 Paper x 160 reams

A4 Card x 70 reams

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

We do not have the information split by internal/external use.

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

We don’t have this information available, but please see below for
information about recycling in the work place.

Recycling in the workplace is just as important as recycling at home.  It
helps save money to support public services, reduce our carbon footprint
and improve our environment for us and future generations.

We are currently in the process of rolling out a better and greener way of
dealing with our workplace waste across all council buildings.

Most buildings do already provide some form of recycling facilities but we
want to improve these facilities to help everyone recycle more, more
easily.  With the new system there will be recycling zones within work
areas, meeting rooms, kitchens and toilets which will help to make
recycling a part of everyone's working day.

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

We don’t have this information available.

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?
We don’t have a target as such but we do monitor our carbon footprint each
year. Since 2008/9 we have reduced emission from our operations by 27%
