Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets
Dear Tunbridge Wells Borough Council,
I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.
I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:
1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?
Yours faithfully,
A R Shaw

TWBC disposed of 35,000 litres of confidential waste, which
amounts to around 172 (200 litre) bins in a year.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper -
if so what is the current progress?
See below
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon
footprint - if so what is the current progress?
As part of the Councils Carbon Management Plan 2010 – 2015 the Council had
a carbon reduction target of at least a 25% reduction over 5 years. The
link below provides all the relevant information in terms of achieving
this target. The Greenhouse Gas report 2013/14 provides the latest
information. After that the Council no longer had a statutory duty to
report on its emissions. All this can be found on our website on the link
below.
[1]http://www.tunbridgewells.gov.uk/council...
In the Greenhouse Gas report 2013/14 we have included direct emissions
from gas and fuel consumption in council owned and operated buildings and
vehicles (classified as scope 1), and indirect emissions from the
consumption of purchased electricity (scope 2). Fugitive emissions, from
air conditioning and refrigeration leaks are not reported. Wherever
possible, we have also reported our scope 3 indirect emissions, relating
to business travel. The data presented shows an overall reduction in
greenhouse gas emissions from the baseline (2009/10) of 4.2 per cent.
Overall emissions have decreased from the previous year, with the most
significant reduction in scope 2 emissions associated with electricity
consumption. Business mileage related emissions are below the baseline
level but have increased from the previous year. Progress has been made in
2013/14 on a number of major projects which have incorporated energy
efficiency and renewable energy technologies. These are expected to
deliver energy and cost savings from 2014/15 onwards.
In February 2014 Tunbridge Wells Borough Council adopted
Climate Local Tunbridge Wells link here:
[2]http://www.tunbridgewells.gov.uk/__data/...
Climate Local Tunbridge Wells states ‘ We will work to reduce
emissions, contributing to national carbon reduction targets by focusing
on our areas of influence in the local area and on our own estate.’
I hope this information is helpful and if there is anything further I can
help with please contact me on 01892 554077 or via email to
