Paper costs and carbon footprint reduction targets

The request was successful.

Dear South Oxfordshire District Council,

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12 months
2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure for printing of publications for external use.
3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.
4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if so what is the current progress?
5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint - if so what is the current progress?

Yours faithfully,

A R Shaw

FOI South, South Oxfordshire District Council

Dear A R Shaw

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request, which was logged under
FOI 17/773 SOUTH and passed to me to respond accordingly.

Under Section 1 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the 2000 Act) you
are entitled to be informed in writing whether the council holds the
information specified in your request and, if that is the case, to have
that information communicated to you unless any of the statutory
exemptions apply. I have considered your request and can confirm we do
hold some of the information asked and I do not believe any of the
statutory exemptions apply to your request. Please find below the
information you requested (where available):

South Oxfordshire District Council is a shared council with Vale of White
Horse District Council, therefore the answers below are the total for both
councils.

I am currently compiling data on the cost to both the environment and
expenditure on the use of paper.

I would be grateful if you can give me information on the following:

1) The total amount of reams of paper used by the authority in the last 12
months

A4=3,150

A3=109

2) The amount of expenditure on printing, photocopying, and consumables
for internal purposes. We are not interested in the amount of expenditure
for printing of publications for external use.

£42,530.75

3) The amount of recycling of paper from your offices.

We are unable to quantify this as paper goes into the mixed recycling bins
which is then sorted at the recycling centre.

4) Does the local authority have a target to reduce the use of paper - if
so what is the current progress?

Not at present

5) Does the local authority have a target to reduce their carbon footprint
- if so what is the current progress?

We are part of the Oxfordshire Environment Partnership details of which,
can be found at
[1]https://mycouncil.oxfordshire.gov.uk/doc...

The Countywide target is a 3 per cent annual reduction in Co2 emissions.

South Oxfordshire’s latest annual greenhouse gas emissions report is
available to download from the website here:

Since 2009/10 there has been a 23 per cent reduction in emissions.

Please treat this as the councils’ formal response under the 2000 Act.  If
you are not satisfied with the decision I have made in response to your
request, you may make a complaint under the council's complaints
procedure.  If you remain dissatisfied after following that procedure, you
have the right under Section 50 of the 2000 Act to complain to the
Information Commissioner if you feel the council has not dealt with your
request properly. You can contact the Commissioner at Wycliffe House,
Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire SK9 5AF (telephone number: 01625 545745).
