Dear Jeff Prescott (Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust - 020),

Thank you for your response. Are you able to clarify the list of anticipatory medications that are recommended and whether co prescribing of benzodiazepines with opioids is advised against?

Yours sincerely,

N Davies

Dear N. Davies,

I have read through this thread and I am still unable to see a question?

This may be due to the 'Whatdotheyknow' email exchange not forwarding the full thread but all I am receiving is the latest message but no previous correspondence.

Could you please just let me know what your question was?

Dear Jeff Prescott (Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust - 020),

My question was are you able to clarify the full list of anticipatory medicines that may be used?
If benzodiazepines and opioids are among these, is co-prescribing of these medications advised against, as per MHRA guidance?

Yours sincerely,

N Davies

Jeff Prescott (Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust - 020), Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust

Dear N. Davies,

The drugs that are carried on Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST) EMS vehicles and are specific in their use for End of Life Care (subject to a verbal order from a doctor) are; Midazolam 10mg/2ml Haloperidol 5mg/1ml Hyoscine hydrobromide 400mcg/1ml Levomepromazine 25mg/1ml

Our paramedics also have access to morphine, which can be administered autonomously in EoLC.

With regards to co-prescribing, with the exception of morphine, all of the drugs require a verbal order by a medical practitioner. It is possible that the doctor providing the verbal order may co-prescribe, where one or more drugs may be used to manage symptoms, however, this would be entirely at the discretion of the prescribing doctor.

Please note that this only applies to WAST JIC drugs carried on our vehicles.

Regards,

Jeff Prescott
