Dear Ms Hegarty

Request for Information

Thank you for your Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request, as received
on 14 November 2018 and acknowledged on 19 November 2018.   For
information, the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is one of the
largest and busiest NHS teaching Trusts in the country incorporating the
Leicester Royal Infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General
Hospital.  Our three hospitals have around 15,000 staff serving around 1.2
million people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, and a further
two to three million people from the rest of the UK who come to us for
treatment from one of our specialist services.  During 2017/18 we treated
1,410,500 patients – that’s 3,864 patients each day.

Following consultation with colleagues from the HR team and from the
Trust’s Clinical Management Group covering Clinical Support and Imaging, I
confirm that the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust does not hold
information covered by your FOI request.  Your request is set out below,
followed by the Trust’s response:

I have been seconded into a post funded by the Office for Students as part
of the Strategic Interventions in Health Education Disciplines programme.
My role is to explore barriers prospective Orthoptic students face when
trying to secure a work experience/shadow placement in Orthoptic
departments in England.

To understand current practices I would like to request the following
information:

1. How many applications for Orthoptic work experience did your Trust
receive in

a) Sept 2016 - Sept 2017

b) Sept 2017 - Sept 2018

2. How many applications resulted in a work experience placement?

3. What is the minimum age for work experience in Orthoptics?

4. Do applicants for work experience in Orthoptics require a Disclosure
and Barring Service (DBS) check?

5. What paperwork are applicants required to complete?

6. Are applicants required to complete an induction?

I am advised that the Trust does not offer work experience in orthoptics.
Prospective orthoptics students are offered half a day observation, but no
formal work experience. The Trust does not therefore keep a record of any
requests for orthoptics work experience.

I hope that this information is helpful (where available). If you require
any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.  If you are
dissatisfied with the Trust’s response, you can contact the Director of
Corporate and Legal Affairs on Tel. No. 0116 258 8615 to request a copy of
UHL’s Freedom of Information Act complaints procedure.

We must advise you that where we have provided information we have done so
subject to the provisions of the Re-use of Public Sector Information
Regulations 2005.  Accordingly you must not re-use this information
without having the consent of the Trust.  Where the Trust is prepared to
provide its consent then it may levy a charge for doing so. Should you
wish to re-use documents provided then you must make your request in
writing stating your name and your address for correspondence together
with the document that you wish to re-use and the purpose for which the
information is to be re-used.

In the event that you remain dissatisfied with the way in which the Trust
has handled any complaint that you may wish to make, we would advise you
of your right to complain to the Information Commissioner at the
Information Commissioner’s Office, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
Cheshire, SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Ms Hegarty

Request for Information

Thank you for your follow-up Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request, as
received on 15 January 2019.   For information, the University Hospitals

Following consultation with colleagues from the orthoptics team, I confirm
that the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust holds information
covered by your FOI request.  In the Trust’s response to your previous FOI
request (ref: HS/FOI/40353), we had advised you that although the Trust
does not offer formal work experience in Orthoptics, prospective
orthoptics students are offered half a day’s observation.

In your follow-up FOI request on 15 January 2019, you asked: What is the
minimum age for observation placements? What application processes are in
place for these placements?

I am advised that the minimum age for observation is 16-17 years old.
Students email the orthoptics service to request an observation placement
and have to state why they want to observe.

I hope that this information is helpful (where available). If you require
any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.  If you are
dissatisfied with the Trust’s response, you can contact the Director of
Corporate and Legal Affairs on Tel. No. 0116 258 8615 to request a copy of
