Ophthalmology Clinic Waiting Time

John Rudkin made this Freedom of Information request to Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,

On February 20th PALS advised that an audit was being undertaken to determine how long, on average, patients are waiting, and that the appointment letter would be reviewed in the light of the results.
The management of waiting times obviously presents a difficult, ongoing challenge - within which the average waiting time is, of course, not necessarily the most important issue. However, I shall be grateful if you will now provide the following information:
How and when was the audit conducted? What data were obtained? What conclusions were reached? What action was taken?

You have previously advised as follows:

"Due to unforeseen circumstances the audit did not take place when originally planned. However, this is now taking place the week commencing the 12th August 2013 and the results of the audit should be available by 16th September 2013.
If you would like to resubmit your request after this date we should be in a position to provide you with the information required".

The request is hereby re-submitted.

Yours faithfully,

John Rudkin

Dear Freedom of Information Contact,

Ophthalmology Clinic 3.

Patients attending this clinic are advised in writing to allow up to 2 hours for an appointment. On December 4th 2012 my appointment (and that of other patients on that day) took almost 3 hours, which unfortunately caused significant inconvenience. Consequently, the following day I suggested to PALS that patients should be advised to allow up to 4 hours for an appointment.

On February 20th 2013 the Trust told me that an audit was being undertaken to determine how long, on average, patients are waiting, and that the appointment letter would be reviewed in the light of the results. I pointed out that the average waiting time is not the most important issue.

In response to my FOI request, the Trust has now advised that an audit carried in August 2013 showed an average of 1 hour and 21 minutes in the Clinic from the appointment time, and as a result no change had been made in the advice to allow up to 2 hours.

Please will you provide the following information from the survey:

Patients (as a percentage of the total) whose appointments took longer than :

2 hours; 2½ hours; 3 hours ; 3½ hours

Yours sincerely,

John Rudkin

Dear Freedom of Information Contact,

Survey of Ophthalmology Clinic Waiting Tim;August 2013.

Thank you for the Response of December 4th, which states that, as a result of this survey, "no change has been made in the advice given to patients to allow up to 2 hours" for an appointment - despite the fact that over 20% of patients had waiting times of more than two hours, and some waited more that 3.5 hours.

Please provide

1) all the information obtained by the survey and

2) deatils of all consequent discussion, analyses, conclusions - and actions considered and taken.

Yours sincerely,

John Rudkin
