Dear Ministry of Defence,
I'm a reporter at the Press Association and I have been looking into the Mirror's campaign for NHS frontline workers to be granted a tax-free allowance similar to operational allowances (OA) given to soldiers serving in dangerous war zones.
If possible, please could you provide figures on:
1) How many people receive OA currently
2) How much the Ministry of Defence spent last year (or the most recent figures you have) on providing OA
Please could you also confirm that the OA daily rate is still £29.02 as per the document below (page 3 - 1 - 31) - and that there are no variations in OA paid to different ranks/employees?
Appreciate your help with this.
