Operation Square Leg targets

National Archives did not have the information requested.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I would like to request, under the Freedom of Information Act, a list of the hypothesised targets (and longitude/latitude or OS grid references of each) that were used in the 1980 Operation Square Leg home defence exercise and the estimated megatonnage of each target.

The Ministry of Defence suggested that they do not hold the information, but that you might hold it at Kew.

Thank you for your time.

Yours faithfully,

Owen Blacker

ARK Records Enquiries, National Archives

Dear Mr Blacker

Thank you for your recent enquiry.

It is possible that the information you are seeking may be contained in
records held here, but there is no likelihood of this. We do not hold any
files on Operation Square Leg (1980) that are at present open to the
public. You could still submit a Freedom of Information request to The
National Archives in order to ascertain the records-if any-we hold on this
subject. But I would suggest that you submit a Freedom of Information
request with the Ministry of Defence first of all.

[1]http://www.mod.uk/

In your e-mail you wrote:' The Ministry of Defence suggested that they do
not hold the information, but that you might hold it at Kew'.

Did you send in a Freedom of Information request to the Ministry of
Defence and did they, under Freedom of Information, state 'they do not
hold the information'.

Once you are further on in your research, you may wish to visit us. There
is guidance available, and our staff are equipped to offer advice. We aim
to help you access the records , and we hope that you find a visit to The
National Archives fruitful and worthwhile.

If you visit us, you will need to register for a reader's ticket and you
will need to bring two forms of identification. Reader tickets can only
be issued onsite. Please click on the link below for more details,
including our identification requirements, opening times, where to find us
and what items are permitted in the reading rooms:
[2]http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/visit... You do not need a
readers ticket to visit the Open Reading Room to view surrogate records.

For security reasons we do not issue reader's tickets by post. The
reader's ticket provides access to the original records in our reading
rooms. Please allow time at the beginning of your visit for
familiarisation with our procedures.

If you have access to the Internet, you may find that the advice about the
leaflets and on-line catalogue on our web site
([3]http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk) will be helpful.

We realise that making a personal visit is not convenient for everyone.
There are many independent researchers whom you can employ to carry out
research for you: I enclose a list of some who undertake research in your
area of interest. You can also find these lists on our website
([4]http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/irlist/). The fee that you will pay
for this service is a matter for negotiation between yourself and the
researcher and may be significantly less than the fee that we would
charge.

Or, if you have a specific request for information held by us, you may
wish to use our paid search service. We will search for the information
you want and provide a prompt and professional service, for a fee that
covers our costs. We will reply to your request within 20 working days of
receiving it, excluding any days between asking for and receiving your
payment. Please see the enclosed `Access Rights' leaflet for further
details.

Yours sincerely

Dear ARK Records Enquiries,

I did indeed submit a formal FOI request to the MOD: http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/op... and they advised me that: "Your request was passed to a number of subject matter experts for consideration but I have to advise you that the MOD does not hold the information you require."

Please consider this a formal Freedom of Information request to The National Archives in order to ascertain the records, if any, that you hold on this subject.

Yours sincerely,

Owen Blacker

Foi Requests, National Archives

Dear Mr Blacker

Thank you for your recent request concerning Operation Square Leg.

Unfortunately, we do not hold any records relating to Operation Square Leg (1980). As this was only a planning exercise, the Ministry of Defence may not necessarily have been the lead department. We suggest you contact Cabinet Office at http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/foi.aspx who may have a record of this operation.

Yours sincerely

John Crawford
