On Line Petitions

Prime Minister's Office did not have the information requested.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Since your on-line petition website started I would like to know,

* how many names/signatures your office has removed from approved petitions,

* the reasons for their removal,

* the url of the petitions that names/signatures have been removed from.

Yours faithfully,

Trevor R Nunn

Hi Stephen

I thought they would use Data Protection as an excuse when I submitted my first FOI request

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/re...

Hence this generic attempt.

It's a bit rich when they remove signatures from a petition without contacting the people concerned. The system is clearly open to abuse and that's the reason behind my latest FOI request.

Trevor

The Prime Ministers Office runs a petition website. They remove signatures from petitions without warning or explanation. However, they do not keep any accessible records of who they have removed and for what reason. This means their on-line petition system is open to serious abuse because it allows anyone with access to remove one or more names from a petition with impunity. The only reason they put forward is that they have the right to remove an entry that consists of more than a name. However, this is obviously discretionary because many petitions can be seen to have an entry that consists of more than just a name. Discretion that can be used without record keeping or accountability should not be used by the Prime Minister's Office.
