Folkestone & Hythe District Council

Dear Mr Fagg,

I refer to your request dated 11 March 2012.

Please find below answers to the questions you raised:

1. What plans there are for Shepway District Council to celebrate the
olympics and the olympic torch procession?

As a council, we have no specific plans to organise any celebratory events
ourselves, other than facilitating the safe viewing of the torch.
However, we are supporting through our events process, local town
councils and community groups to organise their own celebrations.

2. What plans there are for Shepway District Council to celebrate H.M.
Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee?

We assume you are in fact referring to the Diamond Jubilee so have
answered accordingly.

As a council, we have no specific plans to organise any events ourselves,
however, we are supporting through our events process, local town councils
and community groups to organise their own celebrations.  Our Events
Officer has received a number of requests from the public, town and parish
councils, etc for independent events to take place.

3. How much money is planned to be spent on celebrating the olympics and
the torch procession e.g. officer time and capital resources?

Officer Time only – at present uncalculated.   £25k has been allocated for
the Olympic Torch Relay for first aid provision, barriers, portaloos,
cones, high-vis vests, etc.

4. How much money is planned to be spent on celebrating the Golden
Jubilee e.g. officer time and capital resources?

Again we assume you mean the Diamond Jubilee and have answered accordingly

No budget allocated.  10 hours per week of officer time.

5. How will young people be involved by the Council in supporting both
events?

We are inviting primary schools to witness the Olympic Torch Relay, and
asking young people (over 16) to volunteer as marshalls along the route.
43 schools of Shepway have been contacted in relation to the Olympic
Torch. 6,000 children and young people are confirmed to be coming to view.

6. How will pensioners be involved in supporting both events?

Unknown. As not specifically invited by council. The Torch Relay will be
promoted far and wide for clubs, societies and people to come to view.

7. What will the Leader of the Council be doing to support both events?

A civic event will be held to celebrate local Torchbearers.

8. How will councillors be supporting both events?

In their capacity as SDC councillors, they are not doing anything. A civic
event will be held to celebrate local Torchbearers. They are aware of the
torch procession and may have events in their own wards.  Councillors will
be working with their communities to raise the profile of the Diamond
Jubilee, Torch Relay and the Olympics.
