Obesity management programmes
Following the recent publication of our new 'how to' guide the Men's Health Forum is working on a project to assess both the scale and impact of male-tailored weight management services and the impact of the best practice advice on those services.
As part of this we are keen to understand what's going on in local areas around the UK, particularly any new practice that can be evaluated or shared with other areas.
To this end, please can you answer the following questions about gender and weight management programmes in your local authority area:
1. Do you currently have provision for commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services in place:
o For adults
o For children
o For families
2. What were numbers of participants by sex for the commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services in 2013/14? (or most recent figures available)?
o Men
o Women
o Adults (sex not known)
o Boys
o Girls
o Children (sex not known)
3. Do your commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services for adults include:
a. Integrated services (men & women)
b. Men-only services
c. Women-only services
d. Do they include a physical activity element to the programme?
4. Which providers do you work with to deliver each of your weight management programmes?

1. Do you currently have provision for commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services in place:
o For adults – Yes, there are three options; ten-week Shape Up groups, Shape Up one-to-one sessions (up to 12), and Weight Management coaches for those needing more flexible support including being seen at home
o For children – Yes, there is a 12 week Family Shape Up programme, designed specifically for children aged 6 – 13 years, at which a family member must also attend. A new teen Shape Up programme is being developed in consultation with young people and will pilot in the new year
o For families – see above
2. What were numbers of participants by sex for the commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services in 2013/14? (or most recent figures available)? Figures are for the six month reporting period April – September 2014
o Men – Eighty two (82)
o Women – Two hundred and forty five (245)
o Adults (sex not known)

o Girls – ten (10)

3. Do your commissioned or directly delivered tier 2 weight management services for adults include:
a. Integrated services (men & women) – Yes, Shape Up in the city is the main tier 2 programme and is open to all eligible adults
b. Men-only services – Yes, Shape Up with the Albion offers a specific men’s programme based at the Amex football stadium
c. Women-only services Yes, Shape Up after baby is designed for women 6 weeks to 2 years post pregnancy
d. Do they include a physical activity element to the programme? – Yes, all commissioned weight management programmes address both food intake and physical activity
1. Which providers do you work with to deliver each of your weight management programmes? The current contract for tier 2 weight management services started on April 1st 2014 and is delivered by a partnership between the ‘Brighton and Hove Food Partnership’ and ‘Albion in the Community’
