Dear National Galleries of Scotland,

If you could please provide answers to the following. It will help the public understand the varying levels of Asian representation in our national museums/galleries.

How many Chinese mainland artists' work did you exhibit in 2019, 2020 and 2021 respectively?
How many Taiwanese artists’ work did you exhibit in 2019, 2020 and 2021?
How many Hong Kong artists’ work did you exhibit in 2019, 2020 and 2021?
How many Tibetan artists’ work did you exhibit in 2019, 2020 and 2021?
Can you direct me to exhibitions featuring or focused on Chinese artists from 2019, 2020 and 2021?
NB: Please if there are multiple galleries associated with National Galleries of Scotland, then please identify the numbers of artists and names of the exhibitions in each museum/gallery.

Yours faithfully,
Flo Marks

Dear Flo Marks,

Good Afternoon,

In response to your request for information relating to levels of Asian
representation in our national museums/galleries dated 25^th February 2022
I can confirm that we do hold some information falling within the scope of
that request.

For objects which come in on loan for temporary exhibitions we do not
record artists’ nationality in our collection database.

However, we have looked at the permanent collection objects that we have
had on display over the period specified, 2019-2021. The
Portraiture/Photography Team have identified two artworks in which the
artists’ nationalities are recorded as Chinese/American.

o PG 3175 Ena Baxter by Chen Yanning  (link to portrait on the NGS
website: [1]Chen Yanning | National Galleries of Scotland). The
portrait was displayed at the Portrait Gallery in The Modern Portrait
in early 2020.
o PG 3502 Sir James Mirrlees by Yu Ji (link to portrait on the NGS
website: [2]Sir James Mirrlees, 1936 - 2018. Nobel Laureate for
Economics | National Galleries of Scotland). The Portrait has been on
display at the Portrait Gallery in The Modern Portrait since 2018

In addition, the Modern and Contemporary Team have confirmed that the
following works, while not on display in the gallery, have been and are
available to view by appointment in our Prints and Drawings Room* at the
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art (Modern Two):

o GMA 2123 Liu Kuo-Sung (Chinese, born 1932), Floating Mountains,
silkscreen and lithograph on paper (number 13 in an edition of 65)
[3]Floating Mountains (from 'The Commonwealth Print Portfolio') |
National Galleries of Scotland
o GMA 1077 Chao Ling Fang (Chinese British, 1914-2006), Lotus, Chinese
ink and brush on paper  [4]Lotus | National Galleries of Scotland

*Please note that, as with the rest of the museum, the Prints and Drawings
Room was closed for periods of time during 2020 and 2021 due to the the
COVID-19 pandemic and government requirements.
