Number of students that live in the boroughs of London

We're waiting for Nadia O'Michaels to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear University of East London,

Would you please breakdown for me, for the latest available academic year, the number of students by level of study, you had in each of the boroughs of London?

Ideally this information would be provided for both addresses (if you hold them) for term-time address and address used at application stage.

Thank you

Nadia O'Michaels

Would you please breakdown for me, for the latest available academic year,
the number of students by level of study, you had in each of the boroughs
of London?

Ideally this information would be provided for both addresses (if you hold
them) for term-time address and address used at application stage.

From our preliminary assessment, it is clear that we will not be able to
answer your request without further clarification.

To identify the requested breakdown would require us to carry out a manual
data mining exercise. This is because we do not collect address data by
London Borough and it is not available or stored in an easily retrievable
manner. In order to determine, locate, identify and extract the relevant
information would require an analysis of postcode and the postcodes in
each London Borough. In addition, you have asked for this for both home
and term time addresses.

We have therefore calculated that the effort required to determine,
identify and locate the relevant information to answer the above question
would exceed 18 hours of staff time costed at £25 per hour. In the
circumstances, we claim an exemption under Section 12 of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000:

12        Exemption where cost of compliance exceeds appropriate limit.

(1) Section 1(1) does not oblige a public authority to comply with a
request for information if the authority estimates that the cost of
complying with the request would exceed the appropriate limit.

(2) Subsection (1) does not exempt the public authority from its
obligation to comply with paragraph (a) of section 1(1) unless the
estimated cost of complying with that paragraph alone would exceed the
appropriate limit.

(3) In subsections (1) and (2) “the appropriate limit” means such amount
as may be prescribed, and different amounts may be prescribed in relation
to different cases.

(4) The Secretary of State may by regulations provide that, in such
circumstances as may be prescribed, where two or more requests for
information are made to a public authority—

(a) by one person, or

(b) by different persons who appear to the public authority to be acting
in concert or in pursuance of a campaign, the estimated cost of complying
with any of the requests is to be taken to be the estimated total cost of
complying with all of them.

(5) The Secretary of State may by regulations make provision for the
purposes of this section as to the costs to be estimated and as to the
manner in which they are to be estimated.

You may wish to refine your request by narrowing its scope by being more
specific about what information you particularly wish to obtain, including
any dates or period of time relevant to the information required.

If you are dissatisfied with the way the University of East London has
