Number of places of worship registered in England and Wales for each year between 2012 and 2020, by denomination/faith

Dr Clive Field made this Freedom of Information request to General Register Office

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was partially successful.

Dear General Register Office,

PLACES OF WORSHIP REGISTRATION ACT 1855

I write to request national (England and Wales) totals for the number of places of worship registered under the above Act for each calendar year between 2012 and 2020 inclusive, broken down by denominations/faiths.

Please note that I am seeking data for registered places of worship and not those which are certified for the solemnization of marriages.

This information has twice been requested from the GRO by email, on 6 August and 20 September 2020, but I received only an automated acknowledgement on each occasion, and never a substantive response.

Your prompt attention to this request would be appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Dr C D Field OBE

Dear FOI,
I am extremely grateful to the authority for providing information in response to my request.
However, the authority has interpreted the request in the narrowest possible terms, to refer to the number of new (a qualifying word not included in my original request) registrations of places of worship made during each of the calendar years in question.
What I am really interested to know is the total number of places of worship of each denomination which were registered, ie on the register maintained in accordance with the 1855 Act, for each of the years between 2012 and 2020, at whatever 'census date' was used by the authority for calculating such annual totals. Prior to 2012, such annual totals were published by the ONS as part of their reporting of marriage statistics, and it is important for researchers to have access to an updated series.
I do hope that the authority will be able to provide this snapshot of the number of all registered places of worship for each denomination for each year between 2012 and 2020 inclusive.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Clive Field

Dear FOI,

Re: FOICR 61193/20

Thank you for your letter of 1 December.

To maintain the integrity of the series as official statistics, the total to be provided for each denomination or religious body for each year between 2012 and 2020 inclusive needs to be compatible with that previously published in summary form as at 30 June annually in The Registrar General’s Statistical Review of England and Wales; Office for Population Censuses and Surveys, Marriage and Divorce Statistics (Series FM2); and Office for National Statistics, Marriage, Divorce, and Adoption Statistics (Series FM2).

These publications included two tables, one for ‘certified places of worship’ (table 3.42 in the later editions) and one for ‘buildings of worship in which marriages may be solemnised’ (including the Church of England and Church in Wales, table 3.43). It is a continuation of the data underpinning the former table (3.42) I am interested in, which should include a majority of certified places of worship that were also licensed to solemnize marriages and a minority of certified places of worship that were not so licensed.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further clarification and/or if the basis of recording and analysing certified places of worship data has changed since last published (for 2011). Thank you in anticipation for your assistance.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Clive Field

Dear FOI,
Thank you for your letter of 24 December.
For the avoidance of doubt, you should note that I have not requested data in continuation of both the old tables 3.42 and 3.43.
My request, which you quote, makes it clear that my interest lies solely in the data in continuation of table 3.42 ('certified places of worship') for 2012 to 2020 inclusive.
Given your apparent misunderstanding, and the significant delay to which this request has been subject (both in a pre-FOI and FOI form), I do hope that you will be able to progress the request for table 3.42 data for 2012 to 2020 inclusive, within your cost limits.
I note that the data for 2019 and 2020 are 'not held in a readily available format'. If that proves a cost barrier, then table 3.42 data for 2012 to 2018 inclusive would be acceptable.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Clive Field
