InfoRequest, Cardiff University

Dear John

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated 20
February 2019 in which you requested information regarding body and brain
requests and teaching.

For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses.

1. The number of people currently registered to donate their entire body
to the university's medical school for teaching purposes.

There are 5555 active records.

However, this number likely to be significantly higher than the actual
number of potential donors for several reasons:

a)         many of those registered may have passed away and we haven’t
been notified (perhaps due to medical conditions/ organ donation/ post
mortem that would exclude their donation).

b)         recording of refusals was previously less robust than it is
currently so records may not have been updated in the past.

c)         those registered may have changed their mind/moved to a
different area without notifying us.

2. The number of people currently registered to donate their brain to the
university's medical school for teaching purposes.

We do not offer brain donation specifically.  This is therefore not
applicable, however the majority of brains obtained through whole body
donation are used for teaching purposes.

3. The number of cadavers used for teaching purposes during each of these
years: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The number of donors received per calendar year:

2014 – 46

2015 – 48

2016 – 52

2017 – 59

2018 – 47

4. The number of brains used for teaching purposes during each of these
years: 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Only the brains from our body donors are used for teaching purposes, see
response to 3 above.

I trust this information satisfies your enquiry.  The University has a
Freedom of Information Complaints Procedure should you feel dissatisfied
with this response or the way in which your request was handled.
Complaints must be made in writing and must set out why you believe the
University has not met its obligations under the Freedom of Information
Act.  You may email your complaint to [email address] where it
will be forwarded to the Director of Strategic Planning and Governance who
will be responsible for overseeing the review.

If you remain dissatisfied following the outcome of your complaint, you
have the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for
consideration.  The Information Commissioner can be contacted at the
following address: Information Commissioner's Office, Wycliffe House,

Yours sincerely
