Number of patients registered with every GP practice

Department of Health and Social Care did not have the information requested.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please can you supply me with information on the number of patients registered with every GP practice in England, broken down by sex and 5 year age bands, on the first of each month in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 (to date). If monthly data are not available then data at whatever
time points are available should be supplied.

Both the practice name and practice code (in the format Annnnn) should be supplied, and the results should be in microsoft excel, access or CSV format.

This information should be held by the NHAIS (Exeter) system, which is part of Connecting for Health. According to the CFH website, they are a Directorate of the Department of Health.

Yours faithfully,

Emily Shaw

Did you get a reply to your request, Emily? I am investigating data quality in GPRD practices and was hoping to compare the overall government help figures with those of the GPRD.

Rosemary,

No, just the email above saying they didn't really have the information.

You can get hold of this information for SHA/PCT/LA level population from one of the Public Health Observatories such as Erpho (free registration if you have an nhs email address) or for GPs from the Information Centre so I am quite surprised the Department of Health doesn't know this!

Just realised you're asking for GP level populations - you can get these directly from each PCT - you'll probably have to ask their Public Health teams for it. It's also possible the ONS will let you buy this from them. The reason I think this level is not publicly available is that it would be too easy to identify someone purely on the fact of their age, gender and practice code for the specific year as the numbers might be quite low for a smaller practice.

Looks like you will have to write to every PCT with an FOI request. (They should all be able to get it from the Exeter system if they have access or can request it for you from something like a practitioner services unit).

Hope that helps but they might be reluctant to share for the reasons I have described above.
