Dear Information Rights,
Thank you for your response to my request.
I am emailing to request clarification on the data.
Have you provided the number of 'new detentions' starting within each month/week, or have you provided the total number of 'open detentions' counted within each monthly/weekly period?
I understand that, as detentions can span a number of months/weeks, providing open detentions in the period would be double-counting where detentions span across multiple months/weeks.
I ask as the data appears to show, for example, a very significant increase in the number of people detained each month in 2019 vs each month in 2020 (if you add up the relevant weeks). I suspect this is because the data is all ‘open detentions,’ rather than new detentions.
If so, I was interested in counting only new detentions starting within the month/ week. Apologies for any confusion. Please would it be possible to provide this data instead?
Yours sincerely,
Aaron Walawalkar
Dear Mr Walawalkar
I can confirm that the data was for 'open detentions'. Please can I just clarify that you wish for only 'new detentions' and I ask that you submit a new request with only the questions that you need to be answered and we will action this for you.
Many thanks
